The Internet Mail Relay Services Survey Project is a self-funded all-volunteer project whose intent is to collect information regarding so-called Open E-mail Relay Servers on the Internet. The IMRSS Project generates and maintains a secure confidential list of these Open E-mail Relay Servers and this list may be queried dynamically from various sites via a one-at-a-time query mechanism based upon DNS. Many of the IMRSS Project's clients use this dynamic query mechanism to block unsolicited junk E-mail from entering their mail servers.
The DynamicIP Spam Sources List (DSSL) is an information source being provided free of charge to E-mail administrators everywhere. It is typically used as an aid in filtering out bulk unsolicited junk E-mail at the receiving end.
The DSSL is a list of Internet IP addresses that are known to be associated with banks of so-called dynamic dial-up lines. The DSSL does not try to cover all dynamic dialup lines, only those that are owned and operated by Internet Service Providers or by Academic Institutions to provide either free or modestly priced Internet services to members of the public or to the local student population. Traditionally, these exact sorts of dynamic dial-up lines have been major sources of bulk unsolicited junk E-mail that is sent directly to mail servers at receiving sites without the aid of a real mail server on the sending end. (At present, more than 99% of all E-mail that is being sent directly from dynamic dialup lines is in fact unsolicited junk E-mail.) The DSSL was created to help combat this problem.
