1995: Ph.D. in Computer Science at Rice University in Houston/Texas, advised by Ken Kennedy – “Compiler Support for Machine-Independent Parallelization of Irregular Problems.” How to automatically - and efficiently - parallelize sparse matrix operations or molecular dynamics applications, for example.

1990 – 1994: Graduate Studies at Rice, recipient of IBM fellowship. Beer-Bike participant in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, captain of the graduate student biking team in 1991.

1989: M.Sc. in Computer Science at The Pennsylvania State University, advised by Ridgway Scott – “Parallelizing Dynamic Processes.” Comparison of different load balancing strategies (many old and one new strategy), evaluation with a parallelized population simulation in a virtual ocean.
